Really deep Investagatiom. A necessary informative read. I have been looking into the motorized bicycles that use Electrc charges. The extreme cold weather winter days would be tough but if the bikes become more affordable $450.00 is quite a savings over used cars. Wouldn’t it be great if they could build bike tunnels that were climate controlled somehow via solar? Thank you for this thought provoking article. Looking forward to part 2. 🙌🏽 🚴🏼 👏
Thank you for your thoughtful reply! Yes even a really nice ebike costs less than a used car these days. I’d say when it comes to replacing car trips with biking, the perfect of the enemy of the good. I do want to do a piece about how people deal with weather issues.
Cars close us. Bikes and good mass transit open us. Our region was once crisscrossed by electric trolley - the finest form of mass transit so far devised. Folks would catch the trolley from their village to travel to work and shop - rides were close enough apart to be truly useful.
It's doable - it's been done.
What blocks the way to the kind of life that allows our kids to have a future?
I agree! Sitting in a car is like a sensory deprivation experience and it is leading to feelings of isolation all over.
I think so much of the opposition to change is indoctrination. I’m working on a piece now that will touch on the origins of the car centric paradigm, the idea that the road belongs to cars, that we are in love with cars, and that to disentangle from cars would be to regress... because cars have been connected in our minds to progress and of course, endless growth.
Brilliant article Ella! I can’t even imagine delving into all of the political aspects that goes on in negotiating the needs of this country to buy the oil necessary. It’s frankly deplorable what goes on with our government ( & the little we are permitted to know). One of my daughters best friends and college roomie😉 is from the Netherlands and just about everything is done for its citizens to live happy and healthy lives- great choice to include it. My daughter was just hit by a car that caused a three car pile up and the woman just drove off and I’ve been hit by two drunk drivers who already had their licenses permanently revoked- nothing gets done! Bike riding is a great answer in a lot of cases. Thank you for this in depth look on the subject. Looking forward to your next “blog”. Hugs and love to u and our darling Jess!
Thank you so much Tara! I really appreciate you sharing and I'm so sorry to hear about you and your daughter both being hit by cars. How are you and she doing? There should be way better enforcement, especially for repeat offenders. Hugs! <3
